Midge!! & More Experiments = Amazing New FLY!!

My last post is getting a MASSIVEST HIT since I started this blog. Thank you for dropping by. I was just lucky. That's all........ Come and fish DePuy Spring Creek (www.depuyspringcreek.com) to try you luck!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today, winds weren't blowing in Livingston. Weird in a way. I don't have a slighted idea how this winter will be........ Anyway I got to creek by 1pm. YES!! Midges were hatching and trout were rising at a certain spot!! "The first fish was the largest, baby I know" (sing like "The First Cut is the Deepest".............). My Foam Emerger was broken.......... Oh my thumbnail is colored so as I was playing with manicure at my tying bench........

Goose Biot Midge was my lucky fly today!
Nothing wrong with this little one!!
Then I got another nice rainbow!!  Reach-cast, distance, angle, and hook-set, everything gotta be perfect for midge fishing!!

However, stomach sample showed, well, BWO.........I noticed they were still flying......Interesting.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Experiment time!! I was anxious to try my brandnew design that I came up ONLY yesterday morning!!! First fish!!
 Second fish!!

This was already more than I expected!! I felt I could exaggerate as if I had already caught 1,000!!

Trout kept biting!!!

See the shape of this 'Bow!!!

This one was on egg..............
Definitely worth sharing as he (or she?) is one of the fattest I've ever seen at DePuy's......

And call for the day was again on my new pattern!!
 HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I lost another big one. By then it was torn up like this.........

OK. Secret is unfolded. Do you remember this stomach sample from October? (I don't link here). What I was working on was a snail pattern!! This was not the only one stomach sample that contained snails. Also almost every kick-seine collects snails too. Trout here in Livingston might be partial to French cuisine = escargot!!??

This is my expression at my bench. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is my own "Mummy Snail"!! I will discuss later on why it's named so, most likely for my tying video. Ribbing wire is not wrapped evenly on purpose.

Although I keep working on and experimenting some more, I can give it a go. It out-fished eggs!! I already know why this one works. Trout at DePuy's have never seen this before and not many anglers try to fish for snails. Let me see what I come up with next!

Still Dry-Fly, Experiment, & SURPRISE!!

As all of readers out there have noticed, I finally started "long-awaited"(!?) tying videos/instructions via YouTube. I set up a side-bar on the right. Also I try to update "Tying Video" page every time I upload videos with links of YouTube addresses. I'm learning to take videos without blurs, at least as less as possible. I think I'm getting. My speech could be shakey though I have no actual audience in my house......... If you have any questions and comments, just let me know!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So in the morning, I was filing/sending tying orders and shot two more videos. Weather was wonderful for November!! Up to 40s and NO WINDS!!! I figured there might be one more chance for dry-fly fishing!! As I checked into DePuy's (www.depuyspringcreek.com) at about 1PM, a bit later than I planned, one angler told me BWO was hatching and trout were rising! (but he stopped fishing for that??). I did make sure trout were rising first and rigged up my dry rod. I believe what he saw and said about BWO but by the time I was ready to fish, there were lots of midges!!!
My favorite go-to Foam Emerger!!

Suddenly something sipped my fly and tugged my line!! OH!!!!!!!

It was a nicely fall-colored solid rainbow with 6X tippet!!
I tried one more!! Very strong fish!!

Thanks!!
I had one more rise on my fly but lost it. But what a lucky day that I could still fish for hatches with dry-flies!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Experiment time!! Well, this is not for experiment any more. Chewy Green Caddis Larva is a brandnew catching machine of mine!! (WATCH YouTube for how to tie!! I'm showing how to tie this secret fly for FREE in public!!)

Nice buck Rainbow, who is usually a "sucker for eggs", didn't take eggs but Chewy!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

However that wasn't all....................Suddenly at totally unexpected spot (though not secret), I set my hook for the indicator and I felt "BIG!!!", then I screamed "OH MY FISHING LORD!!" as submarine started to pull my line out with a couple of leaps!! It's been a while that I experienced this much "heavy-weight" fight. My rod arm got sore and about to rot off!! I took my warming glove from my right hand as I knew I had to go under to net him. Chases and tug-of-war went on.......... Finally I got him in!!

Probably THE BEST of 2012!!!!!

Something wrong with this tape-measure? Well, I really don't care exactly how big or long..........

One more shot as I don't know when I experience like this next time..............

Seems like big browns are still coming into creek and more rainbows are following!! It's red-hot here at DePuy's!! You should come and fish!! (only if you don't mid winds..........)

Tying Video!!

UPDATED 11/11/12
I have just posted another video at YouTube. Rather making a blog post each time, I figured it's easier to make a PAGE and update there. Now PAGES are below the title picture to get more attention from readers. My camera adjustment is getting better every time!! I may have to re-shoot early ones but let me see where it goes............
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I've been thinking about doing some tying videos but never really happened. I knew I always carry a tripod in my truck and lunch tables for guided trips. So I could have done something before.  But mostly lack of motivation............But since I just registered my little fly-shop (http://leftytyer.blogspot.com), not just to promote my flies and sales, but I really felt responsible to do something for my own sake and for my flies' sake. Tying for public in front of camera (though I have no audience in my house!!) is a little different taste. I can't screw up and I can't be shakey!!

I'm getting several tying orders, including COYOTE. As I tied several dozens this morning, I was finally motivated to do videos. I had to play and adjust my camera and tripod. So pardon some blurs here and there, but here it is, please click on YouTube Link!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKKbck2F9WI
(I didn't link or share as it's too heavy to upload).
(this is just a picture so don't click!!)
I already shot two more original patterns of mine!! My tying and talks seem smoother as I do more!?
I'd like to hear your comments!!

Colder & More Snow, So...........

Here in SW Montana, we woke up with stack of snow on the ground and on our cars. Probably it already equals to last winter's accumulation.......Just kidding......... Let's see what kid of winter we will experience.

As soon as snow stopped, well, I was at DePuy's (www.depuyspringcreek.com). It was colder than yesterday (eventually became much much colder by evening due to Norther). I thought I wouldn't see hatches any more........ There were a few unseasonal PMD on the water!! That tells, "it's not cold, everyone!!, get out and fish!!".

I also noticed BWO were still hanging in there. I started to see some rises in spite of this brutal weather above water. At one spot, I fished in a different way today. Due to winds' direction and ripples caused by winds, I approached trout from down-stream and made "up-&-cross" casting. A couple of trout seemed happily rising. There came my own Pheasant Tail Mayfly Cripple.......
Perfect hook-set!!  Nice strong leaping Rainbow!!! Then I realized I forgot my net at my truck!! From past experience, I knew the consequence = no pictures or poor pictures. So before it happened, I made sure take a proof pic!! While she was on the end of my line!!

Just cropped for bigger image. She's there!
I did got her into my hands. Very beautiful, wide, & rainbow!! Here image is in my memory, though not in my camera......

There seemed one or two more trout rising there. I quickly ran back to my truck and grabbed my net. I tied on CDC Sparkle Dun.

Little cute Cutty!! Surprising to see Cutty rising on dry-flies at this time of the year!!

This could be the last rising trout on BWO for the year for me. I was sincerely happy!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now time for experimentation!! Heavily influenced by Matt Minch's Bead, Hare, & Copper (at Parks' Fly Shop), my version is BPC = Bead, Pheasant, & Copper.
When BHC is derived from Hare's Ear, my reasoning is "how about Old Pheasant Tail?". I tied Pheasant Tail in BHC proportion... I've been anxious to test it!!

 HAHAHAHAHA!!

Some of the best & strongest brown I've ever caught!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another killing discovery was this different style/size of Chewy Green Caddis Larva (that I posted yesterday). Believe, I hooked several trout in a short while. One put really good fight and snapped my tippet off. Rest were all gone before coming to me. There are lots of Caddis Larva like this!!

Tomorrow with or without snow, anyway it's gonna be colder. I am already feeling it. Then on Sunday, all these dry powder snow will be blown in side way, which I don't doubt!! So I will be doing more tying inside. Stay warm!!

Cold & Snow, So...........

Past three days, I was doing some "office" stuffs but also weathers weren't "BWO-ish".

This morning turned out to be cold. I kept my boat ready in case of guided trips for die-hard fall anglers and kept forgetting or putting this away even in November. I finally took seat-covers off for hibernation........Thanks, my boat, for the hard work!!

So it was cold and snowy, I HAD TO go to DePuy's (www.depuyspringcreek.com)!! It's been a while since I did streamer fishing at one of my streamer spots. ATTACK!!

Then I was going to fish with my nymph rig........ I was pretty much giving up but at certain spots, trout started to rise!!! I was positive they were on midges but also there still were a few BWO hanging around.

My go-to Goose Biot Midge!!
I actually missed a few big ones!! Hatch and rise lasted very short. But I was really happy to catch one on dry-fly!!

I took a liberty of "pumping"........Thanks, small one. Actually there were more BWO inside than midges. Interesting.

Experiment time!! I've been trailing my new design under experiments and trails with an egg pattern. I do that because at least I should be able to catch trout with eggs and "pump" them to study more!! Then again, I don't do much pumping on browns recently as they are most likely not feeding a lot. Anyway, nice one on egg!!

I was experimenting this one: "Chewy Green Caddis Larva". Caddis larvae are as abundant as mayfly nymphs and midge larvae!! I know because I've done kick-seines lots of times!!
 BINGO!!
 Even nicer one, huh!!??

Eggy....

Really good one!!

Then the moment I set the hook, I felt it had to be BIIIIIIIIGGU!!! I confess it was foul-hooked somewhere on the body yet it was strong!! It's been a while that I had to chase a big trout.  I fell on my butt!! along the way (which has also been a while) and finally netted him. I taped and this is so far THE LARGEST of the year = 21-inch!!
However he just slipped away before trophy pictures..........We were both exhausted so it was OK..........

Next experiment, this is more like "confirmation", is L.L. Beads!! - Size 20 & 22 (below) as midge larva (worm). Check my sales catalogue!! http://leftytyer.blogspot.com

HAHAHAHA!! I knew trout like it!!

Three in a row!! = Quickly caught up with the egg!!

Last one, another respectable brown, was on egg. Call for the day...........

I have more flies to test!! And there always are lots of trout in DePuy's!!
I don't know other people's cold tolerant level so I can't recommend to come or promise nice & happy days but creek will be running all winter!!
