YouTube Video Series
Here's the final upload of my YouTube Tying Series Winter 2018-19.
3) I've got some ideas of doing new stuffs other than trout flies.
It started with constant uploads but somewhere in the middle, it slowed down and became choppy😟. So much going on in my personal life - that's a reason as well as excuse. I actually have a list of many flies to shoot, trust me!! But the real reasons are some conflicts and nagging thoughts in my mind.
1) It's about time to replace and invest on a new camera, however I don't see exactly what I want in the market right now.
2) I know and have learnt how to edit videos - up until now, as you've seen, it's been one-time shoot video. I like that way as that keeps me on my toes but maybe about time to edit more and make viewer-appealing videos. These reasons require lots of investments on time (and some money). Do I have that much time? Perhaps I could make but not every week........but in order to gain more viewership, I'd better more frequently.......
A) Perhaps Atlantic salmon flies step-by-step = shoot and post one videos for a few steps, perhaps several videos to complete one fly.
B) Also the gallery of Atlantic salmon flies and frames.
C) Post some reading stuffs, i.e., articles I've written before. You know I've written many articles for my blog and Fly Anglers OnLine. And I know how to make those videos. Not just having you read on the screen, but also adding some drawings and pictures. Topics would vary: techniques, introduction of waterbodies, flies, gears, books, and so on.
So, I don't want you to think - and this is the statement to myself - that I gave up on this video channel of mine. I started from total 0 = zero and now gained over 300 subscribers and some videos have been played over thousands times. These facts have been encouraging and I never mean to let down current subscribers and am ambitious to gain more subscribers. So, please take this season as the stepping-stone season or a period I'm hitting the "wall". I will come back strongly!!
Indeed for the thought 1), I seem to have found out what I want, along with how to rotate and assign gadgets on my life and needs.
If you have read this through, would you let me know what you'd like to see on comments?

The Book
I'd like to introduce a brandnew exciting book by Bruce Staples. I came to know him through my participation to East Idaho Fly Tying Expo .
You can easily find and purchase at Amazon, where I got my copy. I just started reading and I'm sure this is a great book!! I'm gonna start to mark and make my bucket list soon!!
Well, I did a little contribution from Livingston😊🙀👏 My photo also appears📷My original fly is also featured😏👍
For fly anglers near and far, who fish regularly or plan to visit, this is a great addition to your bookshelf and in your vehicle while driving around the area. Also considering the season, it will be a great Christmas present🎁🎄🎅😉

What's Really Going On On Yellowstone River - Outfitter's Perspective
It's been chaos over the last weekend around here. And perhaps more demagogues and misinformation have been circulating in the online world. Some may be true, others aren't. This is the special post. It may be a long one. I go through one category at a time.
My Outfitting operation is open and available, as always.
Float trip destinations: Madison, Missouri, and Bighorn.
Wade trip destinations: Yellowstone National Park and available Montana public waters.
Private lake/ponds: Burns' Lake in Big Timber, Story Lake in Emigrant, and couple others.
As I've been reporting, Yellowstone Park waters have been fishing well with relatively cooler air and water, compared to surrounding Montana cities and waters. As September approaches, NE streams = Lamar, Soda Butte, Slough = will be better and better. Then soon west side waters will follow = Firehole and Madison.
Now is the time to try private ponds/lakes around here too!! These are lesser-known due to legends of Yellowstone River and spring creeks, however, they host some true trophy trout one can wish for!! Those trout are not easy to catch by the way. You gotta work hard for them - hooking and bringing in!!
As soon as Yellowstone River and spring creeks (and other tributaries) are re-opened, I will keep you updated.
Proliferative Kidney Disease
Concise explanation
More detailed explanation
More specific explanation
Please click either one or, might as well, all the links.
We could only guess that perhaps PKX has already been in Yellowstone whitefish. Then this historically low-water, in conjunction with hot & dry summer = high water temperature would have contributed to facilitate its deadly actions.
Here's a big HOWEVER = Why trout are not affected?
So far ONLY 1 rainbow trout have been found dead by MT FWP.
I actually think I saw the one as I have walked several fishing access sites.
Have You Considered
Following is my own opinion and analysis based on my experience as an avid fly-fisher and a professional guide, including the past few days of "walking".
Gruesome Reality of Closure
First thing first, as a good Montana resident and a sportsman and a state-licensed outfitter, I will follow the rule. Whitefish is indeed one of my favorite catch (may not be for everyone). Have you caught something 20-inch give or take?? That will rock you world - which I will do in the next post. I'd like them to be back. Most Montana outdoors men & women are also conservationists as well. So I bet majority of us, most likely all of us, understand and will be supportive.
However, just like anything else, there are always two-sided stories, that I'd like anglers in other parts of Montana and other states to know. And I feel obliged to report the reality.
I understand it's also a tough decision for FWP too and I hope they are working on some solutions. However there should be alternatives other than total closures and banning.

Have You Considered
Following is my own opinion and analysis based on my experience as an avid fly-fisher and a professional guide, including the past few days of "walking".
- In recent years, whitefish have definitely been overpopulating in Yellowstone River. I have noticed they even seem to have adapted trout rise form during insect hatches and to our dry-flies.
- Not to mention whities are taking over where trout usually hold (or where we believe so).
- Now consider the low-flow we have this year. Just like everything else with limit & capacity, such as buildings, River has its own limit and capacity - in this case number of fish it can support. That means the most abundant, if not overly-populated, species get treated by nature's own way.
- As you have read links above, PKD may eliminate up to 100% of affected species. However we know, on Yellowstone River right now, whitefish are not entirely wiped out.
- Majority of dead whitefish are 12-14" range, that we can estimate 3-year-old. We have seen 8-inch range are also dead, few among the majority. Then we have NOT been seeing 17" or larger individuals killed and floating belly-up.
- What does this fact tell us? 12-14" range whities are most abundant, as our catch experience prove and agree.
- But also, those not affected are more likely born immune to or have genes to be immune to PKD.
- Why not on trout? Trout seek for cold, running, oxygenated spots/sections of river - that's where we have high potentials to catch them. Indeed major killing occurred from Emigrant to Loch Leven, which we know of to consist of many wide & slow pools. And that's where whitefish are most abundant.
However, just like anything else, there are always two-sided stories, that I'd like anglers in other parts of Montana and other states to know. And I feel obliged to report the reality.
- With the closure of Yellowstone River (float fishing) and Livingston's World Famous spring creeks (my specialty), it's easy for everyone to imagine my outfitting business is heavily affected in a bad way. Certainly not just me. Fly shops are quiet. Lots of guides use Albertson's grocery store as a meeting spot with client, I do too, which has been silent, though I'm not deaf or blind. Suddenly it has become the quietest summer I know in Livingston.
- It's not just us fishing outfitting businesses. Vehicle shuttle companies, water-craft sales & rentals, furthermore, indirectly hotels and restaurants that accommodate visiting anglers have been heavily affected. Again, it's the quietest summer in Livingston.
- Not just fishing - recreational rafting, kayaking, float-tubing, swimming, everything on water is banned. Reasoning is human and our crafts will spread PKD to other water bodies. I bet majority of recreational users are Livingston locals who float ONLY Yellowstone ONLY during summer.
- Besides, PKD are known to die quickly once dried. How can they or their crafts transfer PKD alive?
- By the way, boat wash is MANDATE for all the fishing guide after each float trip whether to accommodate different clients or same clients for multi days!! I will do as my routine regardless of how late I get back home.
- On August 19th, out of sudden and in the middle of the day, anglers were forced to quit fishing, some directly by game wardens. Is this the act of civilization? Shouldn't be there alternatives? - such as "sunset or midnight of 19th"
- Those dead whitefish have been left on the banks. Apparently FWP has ONLY counted dead bodies and has not done any acts of cleaning or anything effective. It starts to smell very badly. Shouldn't be there any actions done?
- These dead or dying whitefish will attract all kinds of varmints and birds in the area. Aren't they, especially bird, spreading PKD more effectively than human and their crafts? Shouldn't be there any actions done?
- Livingston's spring creeks = private properties.......oh where does this go?
I understand it's also a tough decision for FWP too and I hope they are working on some solutions. However there should be alternatives other than total closures and banning.

Thanksgiving Week
I hope everyone had good Thanksgiving dinner and is enjoying the weekend. I did and I am.
I was busy with some other stuffs earlier in the week and managed to fish DePuy's Spring Creek (www.depuyspringcreek.com)only on Tuesday 25th. My tradition for the past couple years has been to visit back the creek on the weekend. However this year, Friday was very windy. And then on Saturday, though morning wasn't bad, the sudden & severe storm hit the area right at noon....... For the first time ever with Winter Pass, I cancelled a rod (I had called in in the morning).
So this week's fishing report consists only one day but here's another tradition of mine. Fishing during Thanksgiving week has been good! Especially when I haven't caught a memorable brown of the year in October, this week can make it up!!...........
I would say it was pretty much the very end of Fall baetis hatch........ Happy!
Then I started to look for Big Uns!! Rainbow is getting heavy now!
Nice one!
And then I did it under the pouring rain/snow!!
A dramatic effect
It isn't quite as large as some others I had hooked & lost through this fall (I know...likely story) but it's still respectable and I'm satisfied.
Another nice one in bright colors!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been working on Atlantic Salmon Flies with great concentration. I have completed a couple of great looking ones. But for some reasons, I can't post them for now. Here are just glimpses.......
Yesterday, since I cancelled my "field work", I worked a lot inside! I shot several videos! Here's a new one for you!

End of May
I really feel May came and now has being gone so fast. Perhaps I was busy. Or perhaps my metabolism is activating faster as the daylight gets longer and weather gets nicer = are you a trout??
Anyway, what's going on now? Johnny will speak on behalf of me.
Yes, Yellowstone River is now in a serious runoff!! As of this typing, the river is running over 20,000 CFS!! This will wash away all the algae and silts that have developed from the past two summers!!
Perhaps this is the only one spot on the River where one can see a tiny piece of gin-clear water. You know where it is!?
No worries, it hasn't reached there yet!!
So I finally made time to sit down and shoot a tying video for my new & immediate success fly from this spring. It's indeed the second stage of my original Pupaerger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeWoKj3OAGg&list=UU4tw3gkahZZ8cx8PUC8vKuQ).
I can't emphasize how significant these seemingly small modifications were for trout response (= my catch!!).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For next two weeks, I'm busy with Master Breeder projects. And I will be on the road. So I don't think I can update anything "fishy" a while.
Meanwhile for fishing report or if you ever consider visiting and fishing around here and need information, check and contact shops I work with.
Montana Troutfitters (https://troutfitters.com).
Parks' Fly Shop (www.parksflyshop.com)
It sounds like, as you might also guess & feel, majority of shops and guides are afraid of high-water year = late start in July and consequently short summer and season............ But somehow yet confidently I feel optimistic. I don't think it's going to be as high as 2011. Then let me tell you that I personally had good fishing in that year. Also since then, I have developed myself to fish and guide under both high and low water. Then I have accumulated experience at spring creeks and lakes/ponds in the area, which don't receive any effects of runoff!!
I'm positive fishing will be good, even better than past couple years!!

Mid Summer Gear Supplement + News Update
Quick Update: The series of my columns for spring creek fishing at Fly Anglers OnLine (www.flyanglersonline.com) is into its climax. I have posted this childish drawing of mine as premier at Facebook but I don't believe I have done at my blog. Hope you get my sense of humor and joke as a fly-angler. Check up the new chapter at FAOL then go fishing spring creeks in your area and in Paradise Valley!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just like filling my boxes with flies, I try to check conditions and inventory of my fishing equipment and gears during winter months. However, some stuffs need replaced in the middle of season, just like popular flies need tied and refilled!!
These lines are for my own use. I'm a great fun of RIO (http://www.rioproducts.com/). On the left is AVID Sink Tip. Probably some of my blog readers might remember that I used to fish with streamers and sinking-line a lot. I still do but less frequently than before. There are some serious & specific lines for streamer fishing but for now and a while, this AVID line will suffice my need.
Then now is the time to replace my beloved and most trusted LT-DT (double taper). YES!! I'm a classic double-taper advocater when it comes to soft presentations, particularly at spring creeks!! If needs be, I can cast as far as others try to do with WF (weight forward) lines!! I have used up both ends of LT. All the crusts of line represents memory of many trout!!
Poorman's wisdom. One doesn't need super techy set-up to rig up fly lines. All I use is a pen held on my tying bench with a piece of packing (transparent) tape!!
And this is the SUPER EXCITING product ever!! I have never felt difference among leaders from different brands but this one totally stands out!! Suppleflex works just as it's claimed. And it suffices my expectations: 1. I tend to be a long-leader guy (this one is built as 13.5 feet) & 2. best presentations during match-the-hatch. With the combination of LT-DT, Suppleflex casts like the extension of fly-line; the ultimate spring-creek rig!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Talking about spring creeks, I need to carry more numbers of flies when I guide creeks than at other public rivers. It's beyond capacity of my vest. There are numerous packs in the market. I have finally found the one that should suffice my need and expectation. I prefer a waist pack to a chest one. Then I expect it water-resistance to protect my flies inside. Not just from pouring rain but also compatible when I have to wade deep and duck (and other physical movements) in the water, say, netting my clients' catches. West Water Guide Lumbar from fishpond will be my match!!
Back-side is constructed to function practically and comfortably too!!

I'll be back to guiding this weekend and busy days/weeks shall follow. Wait for my next report.

Back On The Water - Chasing Spring Hatches
MEDIA: Check up the latest update at Fly Anglers OnLine (www.flyanglersonline.com). I submitted an article about very technical & challenging situation from my spring fishing at DePuy's Spring Creek (www.depuyspringcreek.com). Keyword: Observation
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just about a week ago when my friends were visiting, I was feeling a little discomfort on my left shoulder with the cause I couldn't think of. Then I realized it might be "Cast-ritis". Indeed I had been pushing myself hard since spring hatches occurred and trout started rising in the middle of March. I don't think I am what's called "Burn-out syndrome". But just as DePuy's (www.depuyspringcreek.com) Winter Pass ended (and as my friends went home), winter came back! So last several days, I've been catching up with my fly-tying lists. And my left-shoulder seems healed well!!
Yesterday, it was still cold. Yet winds weren't so bad. So I decided to drive along Yellowstone River and stop at one particular spot. Just as I was getting ready to walk along the bank, winds got stronger from North........... However, river, especially edge structures, looked just great!! I was expecting midge and Baetis hatches. Then indeed they were hatching!!
Now I started to string my line through rod-guides. Just as I was ready to tie on, fish started to rise!! These were my go-to patterns.
Micro Wulff Cripple!
Purple Haze Cripple!
The very first cast!! Cutie-Cutty!!
I also caught a couple of Whities on rises. I pumped one of them........... Midges and BWO were predictable but LOOK!! Ant or Bee was present!? Furthermore a BIG one!!
A respectable Cutty!! Happy!!
Just about when I couldn't take any more, hatches/rises ended (vise versa).
Due to this extra cold/wet condition, runoff will be delayed. What I hope in addition is Mother's Day Caddis hatch!! Let's see what's gonna happen this year! I will keep you updated!

Sudden Spring Storm Yet Match-The-Hatch (Slightly Below)
MEDIA NEWS: A series of my articles is going on at Fly Anglers OnLine (www.flyanglersonline.com). The latest update of today features a chapter for spring time at DePuy's Spring Creek (www.depuyspringcreek.com). Also check out one great article done by my guide mentor Tom Travis! If you haven't done or thought about streamer fishing at spring creeks, this article will change your perspective!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, here it is. The last week with the Winter Pass at DePuy's. As of now, I'm not sure which way I'm feeling: too fast or finally it's the end....... I will think about that later on!
I'm pursuing how many more days I can accumulate. Will I hit Magnificent 80 DAYS!? Maybe...... Then I'm chasing Midges and BWO hatches!! With just about 3 weeks of dry-fly pursuit, I have already gone through Two Bottles of FROG'S FANNY! How about you?
I still see many a run-up rainbows. They are spawning anywhere suitable in the creek. This individual seemed done his duty of life. His body started molded and looked too sore to swim. He was barely sitting still at the edge of creek. He might recover. But if not, he will devote his flesh to the earth and the river.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, 76th Day, it was a nice day. Morning midge hatch was decent enough. I hooked potentially BIG ONES like the one in the last post three times!! But.......those weren't so solid...... It's not that easy every time. I hope I have some more chances to challenge at them!
But it wasn't a totally nothing day. My brandnew pattern showed its potential right off the bat!! I will go more details later on.
In the afternoon, BWO Time!!
Its content. Of course it was taken by Winged Victory (no video for this post!)
I thought this would be a useful picture for some serious fly tyers.
Skinny but really strong brown!
Pheasant Tail Mayfly Cripple was ruined.........
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And today, 77th Day, was not as lucky as number suggests...... Besides weather info, Livingston residents had some hunch last night that something terrible might come today..... It was storm!! COLD!! like January!! It was 30MPH (give or take) Norther with snow. When we have 25-35MPH winds from South, we can at least complain. But when they come from North, there's not much we can do but try to stay warm. I still tried in the morning because weather pattern could be somewhat different at creek from town for some reasons. Well, today, it was just the same. This is how my favorite Flat for midge hatch looked like. Waves made me think creek was flowing backward and swans were barely hanging on the water. Apparently midges were blown away to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park! And I forgot my scarf... I decided to go home and come back in the afternoon, hoping weather might improve.......
Well, there wasn't any improvement........ Probably I should have stayed in my house. But I still hoped BWO hatch could happen, at least trout might be active to feed on nymphs in the water columns. I went to a spot where I have been fishing a lot recently. It wasn't a normal condition. However, I used the terrain so it would be "Wind-Break" and figured out the way to present my flies!! The spot is no secret at all but I let you reader figure out!! I tied on Pheasant Tail Mayfly Parachute as a pilot fly,
and trailed Sawyer Pheasant Tail - Master Angler Version with 6X Tippet!!
Everything (my calculation, wind-break, angle of presentation) worked and I hit a Jack-Pot!! With the very first decent drift, I hooked a nice run-up rainbow on PT!!
I screamed "I can go home with pride"!! ----- something like that!!
After that, it was historical three hours. With the very next cast, I caught a little yet feisty brown!!
Then the 3rd Trout of this brutal afternoon made me confirm that I was right and knew what I was doing!!
Trout were indeed looking for BWO! This brown took PTMF Para on the super-wavy surface!!
Feisty Buck 'Bow also fell in for PT!!
When I was aware, PT was getting chewed off.........
And now totally ruined......
Though only a few, I kept seeing rising trout so I tied on PTMF Cripple!
Taken on wavy surface again!!
Another PT ruined........
Well, I survived this brutal afternoon with great success. There may be someone who might argue that I was doing "nymph-fishing", not "match-the-hatch". The spot I was fishing was deep with velocity, there's no way Sawyer PT would go deep without a couple of BBs. I didn't use any split-shot nor bobbers. And as my pictures prove, my dry-flies on top were also taken. Trout were indeed feeding on BWO nymphs, more specifically ascending ones in the water columns.
I gotta fish tomorrow too. Hopefully weather improves!

I thought this would be a useful picture for some serious fly tyers.
Skinny but really strong brown!
